Let's Build a Power App Session 4: Sorting Search Results, Adding Screens, and Deleting Records

It’s time for another session of building our check-in Power App for my former school.  This is now session 4 of our series. If you are interested in all of the ins and outs of what got us to this point and you want to build the app from the beginning check out these three videos first. Let's Build a Power App | Session 1 Let's Build a Power App | Session 2 Let's Build a Power App | Session 3 In the third session, we learned how to search our data with an input text box, insert locally saved images and have the height of an object changed based on another object’s height. For this session, we will sort our search results, add a new screen with the locations of our students, and delete records.  For deleting records we are going to go above and beyond a normal delete and discuss popup confirmation boxes in an app. Sure it takes more time in the design, but you as the app developer will be grateful you took this extra time.    Below is a more detailed list of item

Power BI August Updates

As always Power BI keeps you on your toes.  It can be hard to stay in the know and keep track of what the newest features are month to month.   Devin and I hope this helps you along your Power BI journey. This month has quite a few updates.   Some as simple as just saving time when selecting data points on a line chart and others way more visually advanced when considering the ArcGIS map visual.   Oh yeah and most important of all Q & A is now featured for three main direct query sources.      If you are like me and don’t always have the time to digest the article that comes out from Microsoft about the updates, check out this monthly digest video  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pu9pFU6mmw .  I hope it can save you some time and help you learn what is new!

Azure Maps Visual UPDATE

Who doesn’t want updates to technology? This guy.   I mean, I love them- they are great – I work for a tech company! Haha. But honestly, sometimes updates can induce a feeling of dread as often an “update” is just a euphemism for “something new to learn.”   And don’t these updates seem to come out JUST when you finally feel comfortable with the *last* version that came out?   That’s what happened a month ago with the July Power BI Desktop update.   The Power BI team put out a fantastic new visual Azure Maps visual.   I was excited to start using it but then realized very soon that my data set would not work.   Why?   I didn’t have the latitude and longitude coordinates for my geography table.   This was an easy fix though because I know I could do a merging of queries as long as I could find a good data source of latitude and longitude.   If you are looking for a free resource that has a numerous amount of US latitude and longitude information check out https://simplemaps.com/

Let's Make a Power App: Round 3

It’s time for another session of building our check-in Power App for my former school.  This is now session 3 of our series. If you are interested in all of the ins and outs of what got us to this point and you want to build the app with check out these two videos first. Video 1 Setting Up Our Power App Environment:  Click Here For Video Video 2 The First Build:  Click Here For 2nd Video In the second session, we learned how to set variables, insert galleries, and make connections to our data. For this session, we will now make some enhancements to our first screen of the app.     Below is a list of items we will be covering: 1.        Insert search boxes. 2.        Write code that will allow our end-user to search through all of the data of a gallery for a specific record or records. 3.        Format our gallery to be more visually appealing. 4.        Insert images saved on our local machine. 5.        Change the height of one object in our app based on the movement

Using Web-Sourced NFL Stats in Data Analysis

Have you ever connected to a web source to do some data analysis? I am sure it's what everyone does in his or her spare time, right?  Well, I am a nerd (proudly) and definitely have tapped into NFL stats in trying to decide who to play on my Fantasy Football team.  If you ever have, then I bet you were been frustrated with the tables that you can import/transform based on the HTML code.  Do you want to eliminate that frustration and save some time in the Power Query Editor?  If you answered yes to any of the questions, then take a look at this video  of how you can add a table from a website by feeding Power BI some examples of what you want? In this video , I will pull in some NFL stats because I sure hope we have at least a little bit of a season.  With any start of the NFL season comes fantasy football.  With fantasy football comes some crazy data crunchers who do their best to put the odds in their favor.  Luck though sometimes prevails.  With a little luck, I can show you a
