Deleting is Scary

While doing Power Apps training with Pragmatic Works, I usually have a common request after students learn they can delete records.   Someone will usually state they like the usability of the delete function, but are scared to put a delete button on the screen.   Their concern is someone will hit it by mistake and then the record will be gone forever.    There are a few ways to fix this issue .   The method I showcase here will show how you can activate a pop-up screen that overlays your original screen.   This method is not just useful for delete confirmations, but anytime you want to show extra information on your screen without being taken to a new screen.   To achieve our solution today we will need to meet the following objectives:   Create the pop-up screen and all of its components, then GROUP them together Use the function UpdateContext to temporarily create a variable to hold a piece of information, which in our case will be tru...

Power App Session 5 | I am not afraid to edit!

I can build a power app and I'm not afraid to edit. And, so can you! It’s time for another session of building our check-in Power App for my former school.  This is now session 5 of our series. If you are interested in all of the ins and outs of what got us to this point and you want to build the app from the beginning checkout the four videos in the playlist first. In the fourth session, we learned how to sort data in a gallery, add new screens, make a confirmation pop up screen, and delete records. For this session , we will pivot the development of our app.   When building apps it will often be the case that after you finish one build you come up with a better idea of how you want the app to function.   That’s exactly what I thought about when approaching this section.   So take a look to see what minor overhaul of the app we did. Below is a more detailed list of items we will be covering: 1.        Add icons for screen...

Let's Build a Power App Session 4: Sorting Search Results, Adding Screens, and Deleting Records

It’s time for another session of building our check-in Power App for my former school.  This is now session 4 of our series. If you are interested in all of the ins and outs of what got us to this point and you want to build the app from the beginning check out these three videos first. Let's Build a Power App | Session 1 Let's Build a Power App | Session 2 Let's Build a Power App | Session 3 In the third session, we learned how to search our data with an input text box, insert locally saved images and have the height of an object changed based on another object’s height. For this session, we will sort our search results, add a new screen with the locations of our students, and delete records.  For deleting records we are going to go above and beyond a normal delete and discuss popup confirmation boxes in an app. Sure it takes more time in the design, but you as the app developer will be grateful you took this extra time.    Below is a more detailed ...

Video 1 Setting Up Our Power App Environment:  Click Here For Video Video 2 The First Build:  Click Here For 2nd Video In the second session, we learned how to set variables, insert galleries, and make connections to our data. For this session, we will now make some enhancements to our first screen of the app.     Below is a list of items we will be covering: 1.        Insert search boxes. 2.        Write code that will allow our end-user to search through all of the data of a gallery for a specific record or records. 3.        Format our gallery to be more visually appealing. 4.  ...

What is a Power App?

I started my journey of switching careers from a math educator of 16 years over to becoming a technology trainer focused on Power BI.   A few months in, I was given the opportunity to also learn how to train clients on Power Apps.   The first thing I thought was,   “What in the world is a Power App?   Is that like an app on my iPhone?”   How in the heck was I going to learn how to code and make an app?   Well, thanks to the company I work for I had so many resources to learn from and hit the ground running.   I’m a month or so into learning the basics and some more advanced functions of making a Power App.     After learning some of the basics of what a Power App can do, I immediately thought, “Gosh, I wish I knew this before now!”  This revolutionary program would solve a critical hurdle at my former school.   We had the problem of not being able to locate a student during lunch.  Wait…. that didn’t sound right! I swear...
