September's PowerBI Update | 2020

It’s that time again for another update from Power BI.   If you like to read about the updates then below I give a brief summary of the features I really enjoy from this month.   If you want the full experience and would like to see the new features demoed for you then check out the video Devin and I made for this month right here à September Power BI Updates    Devin and I hope this helps you along your Power BI journey. This month has quite a few updates and here are the ones I enjoy the most. Smart Narrative Visual This new visual added to the desktop will analyze all the visuals on a report page and come up with insights.   These insights will be displayed as text in your visual.   I think of this visual being like a Sticky Note on steroids.   You can choose what text you want to keep, modify the text, and even add your own measures to this visual.   This is a preview feature so you have to turn this on under the File menu, options , and settings, preview features. Power App Session 6 | Adding Records to our Data Sources

It’s now our 6 th session of building this Power App.   If you are interested in all of the ins and outs of what got us to this point and you want to build the app from the beginning check out the five videos in the playlist first. We are at the point of adding records to our data sources and actually checking in students to locations around the school.  To create records for this app we use the pre-built forms with some minor modifications.  Along with the modifications to the form we will build in some navigation buttons along with a button to submit the record or cancel the record from being created. The goal of these next few blogs and videos is to build an app, but not do it too quickly.   I want to let the information soak in one week at a time without overwhelming anyone.   If you think the videos cover too much or not enough material for one session please email me at mpeterson@pragmaticworks.com so I can modify the future sessions or leave a comment below the video.

Power App Session 5 | I am not afraid to edit!

I can build a power app and I'm not afraid to edit. And, so can you! It’s time for another session of building our check-in Power App for my former school.  This is now session 5 of our series. If you are interested in all of the ins and outs of what got us to this point and you want to build the app from the beginning checkout the four videos in the playlist first. In the fourth session, we learned how to sort data in a gallery, add new screens, make a confirmation pop up screen, and delete records. For this session , we will pivot the development of our app.   When building apps it will often be the case that after you finish one build you come up with a better idea of how you want the app to function.   That’s exactly what I thought about when approaching this section.   So take a look to see what minor overhaul of the app we did. Below is a more detailed list of items we will be covering: 1.        Add icons for screen transitions 2.        Discuss how to group obje

An Update on My Journey | September 2020

It is time for another update on my Power BI journey. In my last journey update , I thanked quite a few people who have been giving me the support and encouragement to continue on this journey.  I want to say thank you to all of them again as they never fail to provide the praise, encouragement, and help whenever I need it most. Okay, so here is the update.  I have passed another certification!!!! A few weeks ago I took the PL-900 exam also referred to as the Power Platform Exam.  If anyone reading this blog now is thinking about taking this exam and wants to gain insight into the resources I used--- then keep reading.  In addition to passing another exam, I am now a fully-fledged official Microsoft Certified Trainer.   I just received the email this week from Microsoft and I am super excited to have reached this accomplishment within the first 6 months of beginning here at Pragmatic Works. Most of my days are now filled with training sessions that have been developed and tail
